"so i want to sync my phone to my laptop but i don't wanna get rid of any of the songs or photos"

so why sync at all? WHen you sync, everything not on the computer's iTunes library will get erased from your device. This has been a problem with syncing for years, yet iPod and iPhone (and now iPad) owners act like Lemmings and repeat the mistakes of previous owners of those device.

Don't sync - use manual management. I've used iPods for years, and my current iPod is over 3 years old and I've never relied on syncing to put music on my iPod. MM mode is a legit setting in iTunes. It's much more reliable than syncing - superior in every way. I've managed to avoid the problems that other iPod owners run into when they insist on syncing - including keeping songs when I want to add new ones.

MM works on any iPod you have - I've used it on different generations of iPod Nano and Touch, iPhone (incl. IOS 7) and iPad.

If you use MM you should be able to add songs w/o erasing the ones you already have.
