Merrian Webster dictionary, are there errors?
Does anyone here have Merrian Webster dictionary, premium version, on iPad, iPhone or Android? I have on iPad and Android and found some errors. I'm 13 and have been studying English as a foreign language.
In the illustration for "horse", the names of the parts of the body of such animal are a real mess. It seems they were assigned at random. I didn't know most of the words they give there, but when I noticed cheek was pointed to one of the horse's legs and mane to its back, I realized there was something wrong. I looked up the words I didn't know in the dictionary and in fact their definitions were completely different from what they suggest in the illustration.
I also noticed that the pronunciations given for horse and hoarse, in both cases by a feminine voice, are in fact the pronunciation for coarse. They replaced the h by a c.
If I'm right, that sucks. Since MW is supposed to be a reliable source, someone studying English, even a native, if he or she is a child, can get a completely wrong idea of what some words mean and be sure he or she has the right definitions.
Do you, native English speakers, agree MW is wrong?
According to what you've said, yes; MW is wrong.
Dictionaries are constantly being updated with new words, new pronunciations, removed words, etc. Since there are so many words, they can't check everything over and over and rely on user-feedback often times. Just send them an email or something with your issue and they can fix it.
It sounds like the arrows are messed up, although it could be your device rather than the dictionary itself, I don't know.
As for the pronunciation, I'm going to guess that since the "c" (k) sound and the "h" sounds are pretty similar in English (in terms of how they are enunciated--the tongue is in pretty much the same position, but it touches the palate for "k" and only approaches it for "h"), that it's more a case of your ear being attuned to the phonemes of your first language so what sounds the same to you sounds completely different to a native speaker.

- Where can i go to learn how to make a dictionary like iphone app? I just want to make an app where one would enter a word and a phrase would pop out that was associated with that word. I guess i would need to build a database to store all of the info. I'm clearly new to this. I don't want to do this for a living i just want to make one app. It would be great if you could point me in the right direction or if you know yourself that would be great as well. Peace and blessings
