Moving to Germany from USA to live for at least 3 years to study. How can I still use my phone to text/call/FT Americans while I'm there?

Do I need to get a completely new phone? Plan? Phone number? I don't understand this process, as I have never gone through it before. I currently have an IPhone 7 and I use AT&T.

You can keep your number and "roam" but the charges can get out of hand. Check with your carrier about international roaming plans, or you can get a locally-issued SIM over there and swap in and out as needed.

"About cellular data roaming options for your iPhone and iPad"

You can do so exactly as you would in the USA, provided that your call plan has "roaming" enabled for both calls and data.

But roaming internationally costs a fortune: you also have to pay not just for outgoing calls, SMS, and MMS at international rates, but you have to pay the international cost portion of incoming communications from the USA.

So if your phone is a GSM model and is compatible with the frequencies used in Germany (such as all current iPhones), then make sure before leaving the USA that your phone is unlocked to accept any SIM and then buy and install a local German prepaid credit SIM. That will also get you a German mobile phone number and under current EU rules you can then use that in any EU country for the same cost as if you were still in Germany.

Whenever you wish to phone home just use whichever SIM is offering the cheapest rates to the USA. Or if you have an iPhone and are calling another iPhone user, use the free FaceTime (audio or video) or iMessaging.

  • Will an iPhone 5 bought in USA work in Germany & the UK? I'm presently working in Germany, and will be travelling to the US soon, and I need to know if an iPhone 5 (Unlocked) bought in the US will work in Germany and the UK. I currently have an iPhone 4, which works in Germany and the UK, perfectly. I understand an iPhone 5 is considerably cheaper in the US, but need to know 100 per cent, that it would work in Europe.
  • Which Iphone bends the least (6 or 6 plus) bend the least? I was thinking of getting the 6 or 6 plus but I was wondering what bends the least? I do put my phone in my pocket sometime especially when I'm walking but sometime when I sit down it's in my pocket. Note: I will get a case but which one bends the least? Note: And I will put it in my front pocket for whatever pants/shorts I wear.
  • IPhone 6s Plus, how do you mute a call while on call? (not how to mute ringer)? I have a new iPhone 6s Plus and need to listen in on conference calls without other people on the call hearing me type in the background or the kids, so how do I Mute the sounds on my end so I can listen in without disturbing the others on the call? My current phone keypad on the iPhone 6s Plus only shows 1-9,0 *, and # buttons.
  • If I live in the USA and text someon from Canada will it cost? I live in the US and have a friend from Canada… My phone is the iphone 5S and I use AT&T… I have unlimited texting so if I text my friend from Canada will it still be extra money?
