My computer won't let me reset my iphone, what do i do?

I bouGht an iphone 4s off of craigslist but it has a passcode on it. He assured me that all you do is reset the iphone and its good, but when i try it on my computer it comes up with an ERROR message and doesn't let me! What should i do? Its not for me and i need it by christmas:/

Take it to the apple store and they'll do it for free, that's what I did. And why would you buy it if he had a password on it?

No problem, relax.

Disconnect the iPhone from your computer.

Start the iPhone.

If you can get to the menu, then do so, and go to Settings/General/Reset and delete everything.

If you can't because it's locked, enter any passcode three times (say 1111, but obviously it will be wrong) and after three attempts, the iPhone will delete itself and become blank.

Then you can set it up as a new iPhone, or just wrap it up for the person who will have it.
