My iPhone is stuck on white background with black apple logo?
At one point it showed th really low battery icon with the little red bars but now its stuck on a white background with a black apple logo and occsionally the screen goes black before returning to white screen with black apple logo
do I just need to charge it for a really long time or is something wrong?
It's crashed. That is common with phones and tablets, if the battery runs down completely.
You need to do a "hard reset" to restart it properly. If it's an iphone 6 or earlier, press and hold both the power and home buttons for about ten seconds, until the Apple logo reappears.
If it's a 7 or later use the power + volume-down buttons rather than power + home.
That does not delete anything, it just forces the phone to start up as if it had been properly turned off.
Make sure it's on charge and has been for a couple of hours before trying that - the "fast charge" system is not necessarily working while it's like that & it can take quite a while to get enough power in the battery for it to complete a reboot & start working properly before running out of power again.
(The same thing works with ipads, or use power + volume-up on most Android-based devices).
