My laptop stops responding as soon as I connect/click iTunes?

This has been going on for a while now. Whenever I connect my iPhone or even just click on iTunes, the laptop stops responding straight away. I thought that perhaps it was just my laptop and bought a new one, hoping I could access all my files by just logging in. Unfortunately, it didn't work and I'm back to square one. I've tried re-installing it but I'm scared to play around with it too much in case I lose everything. ITunes works fine on my new laptop, but I'd really like to be able to get the files from my other account.

Has anyone got an safe suggestions?
