Not enough iPhone storage and don't know why?

I want to update my iPhone 4 8GB to iOS 6. I deleted All my apps. Deleted hundreds of photos, contacts, notes, and emails. Still not enough space. I only have 1.8 GB available but I need 2.4GB. I have 1, 008 photos now and like 95 contacts. Also about 230 emails. No apps. My friend had more photos than me and had no problem. What is using up all my storage!

Back it up in itunes, restore you iphone, it will update to ios 6, then resync off your back up

Go to Settings>general>usage and it will show exactly how much space each thing is using. You can also transfer all your pictures to your computer, and delete your email account from your phone.
