Parental rights? Or just plain cruel?
This is a discussion about whether parents should be able to permanently take away property from a child without their consent, let me give you some context here. Let's say there's a child (it's me) above the age of 16, has brought one ipad, one samsung phone, a laptop and one iphone in that consecutive order over the course of 5 years, with the total amount of money spent adding up to be over 4000+ dollars. The guardian of this child regularly takes these devices off the child, everyday at night saying that they are not allowed them at night in their room (despite the fact that I brought the devices I have complied with these rules.) Until recently two of the devices went missing, and the child went looking for them, this went on for nearly a year, and on more than one occasion the child ask the parent where the devices were and if they had seen them. Until they finally realised that the parent had been hiding them the entire time (and lied to my face about their whereabouts). The parent also claims that if the child is disrespectful or doesn't comply with the unreasonable and HYPOCRITICAL rules created (some of which include, NO LYING) So what would you do in my situation? And do you think my mum should be able to do that?
You're a child, so long as your parents aren't causing you harm they can pretty much do whatever they like. BTW, it's not "your room", it's your parents' and they paid a lot more than $4000 for it. When you move out and start paying for your own life you can make your own rules, until then stop whining like a spoilt six year old.
It is with in their rights and possibly would be considered a duty!
Such measures are reasonable and preferred to other actions some parents might take for "lying".
Now I can't absolve the conflict over you feeling lied too about where they were at. But this too might be a teaching experience. If you feel it is alright to lie, then it would be a chance for you to learn what it is like to be lied too!
Sorry but at 16 you still need "supervision".
Please congratulate your parents on being good parents. While you were spending $4000 on electronics, I assume your parents were housing, feeding and clothing you. How much do you think that cost? They could have taken that money to pay for your living expenses. And they can certainly regulate how much you use your electronics. When you're 18, move out, support yourself, and they won't be able to take anything from you.
No lying is a good rule.
If you are under 18, then you do not own any property or money. All the things that you think you own are actually your parent's (or legal guardian's) property. They have the authority to take them away for any reason they want. Even if you go out and get a part time job and earn some money, that money legally belongs to your parents. If you buy something, your parent's own it. If you get a gift from someone, your parent's own it.
Those are the facts. It doesn't matter if anyone here thinks it's cruel or not, we can't change your parent's rules or behavior. You can complain to your teenage friends if you want sympathy. If you want to improve your quality of life then do what every other teenager has done throughout the history of teenagers… Act like a perfect child around your parents, do whatever you want on your own and don't get caught, and hide things you don't want them to know about.
Your main problem is that judges are parents too. A judge is probably going to fine a way to rule against you.
Yes, parents can legally do that.
Children don't own property. Even if they bought it, by law, the parents own the devices.
Parents can confiscate items as they see fit.
