Shattered iphone, what would be my best option?

I dropped my iphone 4s a couple of days ago and the screen shattered completely, but the actual phone still works. Apple said they can replace it for 200, but my insurance said they would replace it for 170. But I was also thinking, maybe I could just get my screen replaced by one of those vendors in the mall? It would be a little bit cheaper. What would be my best option? Has anyone ever replaced their screen before, I'm worried to let somebody do that, but it might be the best option.

Those vendors in the mall will cost less, but do not leave until you've tested the phone in every way.

A broken screen used to be a death knell for a phone/tablet because the screen was the majority of the price. Fortunately they have come down considerably (installation is fairly simple, but requires a few special tools and someone with knowhow).

I think one for an Iphone 4 was around $50 (uninstalled).

Replace that screen yourself and save the extra money. There are a ton of guides on YouTube walking you through the repair. It is pretty simple and normally won't take any longer than an hour. Quality replacement screens can be found on a few reputable places online. I avoid places like eBay or Amazon though because I've had so many issues with their quality. I would check out these guys - http://www.strivemobile.com/iphone-4s-screen-replacement-repair-parts - they have kits and color conversions and everything you might need. Used them quite a few times and never had an issue with their quality.

Hope that helps and good luck with your repair

  • What is the best option for mobile internet for a foreign traveller in the USA? Next month I'm going to make a roadtrip through the USA for 21 days. Now, I'd like to have mobile internet (3G or 4G/LTE) during my whole trip. Preferably about 1 to 2 GB for not more than a total of $50. I'll travel through CA, NV, AZ and FL (start in San Fransisco) and I prefer a sim-only prepaid card. I can't find helpful information on the websites of AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. I only can find plans including a phone. I've got an iPhone 5s GSM (A1457).
  • Shattered the back of my iphone? Where can i get it fixed? I dropped my phone today. The whole back is shattered. Couple of my friends were telling me where they got there's fixed. It's really expensive though. I was wondering if i should just order the back piece and do it my self. Do y'all recommend that? If yall do what website should i order from? Or should i pay for someone do it? I have the iphone 4 not 4s.
  • Shattered iphone screen. What should i do? I'm 15 and today after 10 months my brave iphone 4s finally broke its screen. I understand that apple will charge me, but is there anything i could do to persuade someone at a genius bar to replace the screen for free? Or is there anywhere that would do it for about £20? I've checked protect your bubble but i have to pay £50 to get it fixed even of the claim is successful! What should i do, my dad will hit the roof and probably take it off me.
  • Is the NAS (Network Attached Storage) the best external hard drive option for a home? I have been looking at the WD MyCloud 4Tb version specifically to store my iTunes music library and any videos I may have in the future. Been wondering if via the NAS, one can access their iTunes music in their cars without having to store the music on a local flash storage drive like on their iPhones. Everything can be remotely accessed through their NAS at home.
