They are VERY similar with regard to what's inside, and run the same processor. Outside, the X has a better (if not bigger) screen, weighs less, slightly better back camera, and the face recognition front camera instead of the 8 plus' fingerprint sensor. Those extras may or may not be worth $200 to you.
X if you can afford it

Neither buy the Sony XZ2 or Sony XZ2 Premium.

Samsungs suck, stick with Apple. Trust me, I know. I had been buying Galaxy phones since the S3 but I finally leaped to an iPhone several months ago. There's almost no way I would ever go back to a Samsung. Before that, I tried Sony, LG and Motorola smartphones and they can't compare to the Galaxy S or Note series. The Galaxy series is a cut above Sony, Motorola, LG, and the rest while the iPhone is a cut above the Galaxy.
The only time it's worth it to buy a Galaxy S phone is between October to December when the S series goes on sale.
8+ vs. The X.
I tried the X at first but I switched to the 8+ because it was easier on my eyes. Both are impressive. The iPhone X is a little bit easier to use because of the Facial recognition. However we're 3-4 months from Apple launching an entirely new line of phones and all of them are evolved from the iPhone X. I would suggest holding off in favor of the upcoming 6.1" phone with a TFT display. This year apple will release 3 phones that will lay these knockoffs to rest. The cheaper 6.1" with a TFT display, then a 5.8" OLED phone that's similar to the current iPhone X, finally a 6.4" OLED that would be like an iPhone X+.
