Status Symbol for Teen Girls?
In your opinion what is a status symbol for a teenage girl? (ages 13-18) Especially a High School girl?
Is it a iPhone, designer purses, name brand jeans, good looks, a car, or even a nice house?
What are status symbols in your school? What is a must-have for all the popular girls?
Additional Information:
I'm asking this question as research for a friend, I'd like to give them valid and usable advice!
Good looks and nice clothes.
I started Jr High in grade 7 with 10 grade 7 classes in total. There were a variety of cliques. The oober popular group were the wealthiest, most athletic kids in the gifted & enriched program… Just all around perfect seeming people…
I started Sr High in a school with 2 grade 10 classes… Athletics were the original marker… That was quickly replaced by who had the most access to a vehicle (a must in the country) and who could buy liquor at either of the two establishments in town that seemed to know everybody's parents…
Bear in mind I finished school in the 1980's… Its probably changed a lot since then…
When I was a teen, it was attitude. Way more than anything else.
The "popular" girls were not always the wealthiest… Though good looks and well-put-together clothes did help…
Then again, I went to a school where there was a LOT of Native Americans compared to other schools in the district, but still few enough to make them a minority. The "Natives" were all related in some way or other, so it was kind of like a big pack of kids who'd known each other their whole lives, who's parents had known each other their whole lives, etc… That were super comfortable around each other and protective over each other… A lot of them were natural athletes and a lot of them were really smart too… And there was a constant chip on some of theirs' shoulder that made them intimidating. You didn't pick on a native kid without earning the wrath of the whole group… So naturally, most kids wanted the approval of the native kids. Most of them were attractive too (the athletic nature of the group helped with that, I think) so that kind of made them "cool" also. Few of them were "wealthy"… Yet they still set fashion trends around the school. I remember when the free tee-shirts passed out at tribal events became all the rage at my school… Non-native kids would buy them off the native kids, lol… Or tribal hoodies, the non-native girls would wear their boyfriends jackets that came from tribal events (the local tribes tend to give out jackets, hats, sweatshirts, etc… For various events) to show that they were dating a native… So silly now that I look back on it all.
The non-native kids who were popular were "in" with the native kids.
The trick is to have something others want… Even if it's just approval.
- Why doesn't my iPhone show the 4G symbol but it shows the LTE symbol? I have Verizon as a carrier, and I just aksed this question but didn't ask it right. YES I HAVE 4G LTE. I've had the phone for 2 months and have been many places with it. It only shows the circle, 3G, and the LTE symbol, but not 4G or the Edge symbol. If anyone knows why, please let me know.
- Why do girls copy other girls? There's this girl I know and she 1. I colored my hair brown, so she did 2. I became a cashier at a grocery store, she did 3. Wore my glasses, so she did 4. Went to a facemakeover, she did 5. Bought an iphone, she did Those are just a few. What would cause a girl to want to copy you so much?
- Why are Apple products considered a status symbol? Maybe they were at some point, but why is it still considered one when everybody and their cousin has an iPhone? From 6th graders to celebrities…
