Switching and att iphone to a metro pcs service?

Hi, my mom is giving me her iphone but its under att and i have metro pcs does the iphone need to be unlocked for me to be able to switch the plans or can i just get a metro sim card for the iphone and it will work just like that?

Yes, exactly. The phone needs to be unlocked in order to put the SIM of the other carrier. Ask AT&T to unlock it for you or buy it for $30 on eBay or below.

  • Would metro PCS and iPhone work well? I'm buying an iPhone 4S and I'm apparently (my parents) wanna switch to metro PCS, in fact they ARE GOING to switch by the end of the year. I've heard that metro doesn't have a very good service, but a couple of other people have told me that it depends on the phone I have, so… Would the service of metro work well with the iPhone? (By service I mean if I would get signal pretty much everywhere and browse fast to the Internet)
  • Metro pcs and iphones or at&t phones? I was on metroPCS website and saw that they now unlock at&t phones in certain cities ( San Francisco, Dallas, and phoenix are just some i can remember) does anyone know what other city stores are now unlocking them i live in Sacramento area what's the closest is there a store in Oakland Stockton anywhere in there thanks please help: D
  • Metro Pcs 4 lines for 100 and T-Mobile? I currently have the 4 lines for 100 with metro pcs but i want to get an iphone 6, and i believe Metro can't run on them if they arent unlocked (?) and i don't want to pay extra cash for it. So, i was wondering if having one iphone run with tmobile but yet still keeping the plan would be possible? (Given that metro runs on tmobile and they both are offering that plan) thanks. Ps I live in Los Angeles. I don't know if ig matters but yeah.
  • I'm switching iPhones and services, and I concerned about the process and loss of service (even temporarily). Any tips on how to handle it? I bought an open iPhone SE to replace an older iPhone, and I'm signing up for a different service. They provide the SIM. And of course I want to port my old number to the new service. But I don't want to cancel my old service before the new one is set up. If I set up the new service before I cancel the old one will I have two functioning phones on the same number for a while? I'm not sure how to handle this and cause the least disruption to my service.
