Switching from Verizon to Straight Talk? - 1

I have a Verizon iPhone 5 that is paid off. My bills have been outrageously expensive due to overage charges. So I bought an unlocked iPhone 6s from Amazon. Now I have a phone that is activated through Verizon and a separate unlocked phone from Amazon. I want to take this new phone and set it up with Straight Talk and cancel my Verizon phone. Where do I start? Do I cancel my Verizon first? But then if I do that, would I get a new number? Or do I go to Straight Talk and set it up, then cancel Verizon?

If you signed a CONTRACT with Verizon - for perhaps 2 years - you are stuck, unless you want to pay a HUGE fee to cancel it. We let our ATT contracts expire after 2 years, had paid off out iPhone 6 phones, got them unlocked, and went to Consumer Cellular. Having analyzed our usage, we foudn tat we were paying for something unlimitied, when we only used a portion - and could pay less. If we had stayed on the ATT contract, even them no longer charging us to pay off our phones, it would have been $85 for the 2 of us, per month. CC - we pay under $50. That's over $400 a year in savings.

So before you consider cancelling anything, find out what the COST of that would be. Then make your move.

You go to the new carrier first and port your number to the new carrier (if you want the same numbers), this will cancel your Verizon account. Do this before the start of your new billing period and all you will have is a final bill to pay with Verizon.

And your plan needs to fit your usage, that is why you were paying for overages. Get a play that makes sure you DON'T have any.
