Home button on my iPhone 4 won't respond?

I've had my iPhone since March and I tend to treat it with good care. There's never any response i can get out of it. I'd press the button rapidly multiple times, and it wouldn't respond. It would open up 'Voice Control' periodically, but I think that's because I set it to go to voice control on 3 clicks. The only diagnosis I can give as to why the button won't respond is because it could be slightly water damaged. I heard a way to fix this is to open up an app and hold down the lock button until the "slide to power off" screen appears, and then hold it down with the home button. That didn't work. Any idea on how to fix this? I'd really appreciate it!

If you still have a warranty, I would bring it to the apple store to let them take a look at it, if not try resetting to factory settings via itunes.
