Using a generic iPhone 5 chord?

So I want to get another iPhone 5 chord from ebay for when I'm not home but I'm scared that it will hurt the battery not using the one that came with it. Does anyone use a generic on and their phone is still fine?

I had a couple generic cords and my phone is still fine, but let me tell you that there are malfunctions sometimes. By malfunctions, I mean that it fails to do its job sometimes, and other times, it just stopped working after like the fifth charge. You should be fine if all you're worrying about is hurting the battery, but nothing beats the actual Apple cord (in my opinion).

The people who sell them all have positive feedback, but is it safe to use a generic brand? I want to swim while using the case and all because after all it is WATER PROOF. Should I get it on amazon, buy a used branded one on ebay, or buy a $25-$30 one on ebay that is generic but unused?

Now, I'm on Amazon and saw a bunch of wall adapters and cords that are for sale pretty cheap. It says "by Generic" which means it's brand is Generic. I've heard many things about chargers that aren't Apple ruining the phone or not working. Is Generic an Apple-approved, or reliable brand to use?
