Using soapy water to put screen protectors on?
I've heard of using sappy water to put your screen protector on so you can position it and not get dust and air under it
Can you do this technique on any screen protector? Will it damage my new iPhone 5?
I would say yes you could be able to do that. As long as you don't spray it directly on the iPhone you should be alright I just did this last night to my phone using a screen protector kit that actually came with a little sprayer and a rubber squeegee (its just like putting window tint on a car). Just don't use too much and I would bet that It would be alright. I would recommend one of those kits unless you already have the protectors.let me know how it works for you.
