Verizon is telling me I've used up 90% of data?

Last year I had an iPhone 4 and I was always on the internet looking up stuff, snapchatting, and on facebook and NOT ONCE got a message saying I'm using up my data. About a month ago I got the new iPhone5s. A week ago I got a message from verizon saying I've used up 70% of my data plan and if I go past 100, it costs an extra $15. I thought this was because my Wi-Fi was turned off so I turned it on. Then, last night it told me I've used up 90% and they will charge me an extra $15 if I go 10% further up until January 2nd.

I don't understand? I thought everything on the iPhone was suppose to be FREE as in free internet! Free access to your mail! I paid so much for an iPhone plus the contract, and then I supposedly have limited access to internet? This is bull. What am I doing wrong?

They don't charge you for internet or email use if you are on Wi-Fi. They do charge for internet and email if you are out of Wi-Fi range and use your data plan. So maybe you are out of range of your Wi-Fi and your phone automatically switches to your data plan.

Be sure your Wi-Fi account is set up on your new phone and check at the top of the screen for the Wi-Fi symbol to be sure it's in use.

Having an iPhone doesn't mean everything is free. Verizon has limits on data - when you go over you have to pay extra.

Using Wi-Fi doesn't count towards data - use Wi-Fi as much as possible.

Just because you use your phone the same way as the old one doesn't mean you're not using more of it - doing More snapchatting and stuff. Since you've got a faster phone - your phone has 4G that your last phone didn't - It's easy to misjudge How much surfing you're doing. Also not using Wi-Fi until recently doesn't help. Hopefully you've Actually got access to a wireless network.
