Verizon wireless internet modem working on only SOME of my laptops? - 1
So I have internet service with verizon. Our modem is used by about 6-7 laptops in side the house.
So here's the thing.
I bought a new laptop recently, and been using it, so I had my old laptop in the corner.
I was online today in my room with my new laptop and my iphone using the Wi-Fi, then all of the sudden the Wi-Fi stopped working. It was "connected" and the 'signal" was great but it said
"Ipv4 Connectivity - Internet"
"Ipv6 - No internet access"
^ that was the status of the connection
so I turned on my old laptop, and it said the same thing, BUT. The Wi-Fi on my old laptop WAS working.
so my questions are:
1.why?
2. How can I get the Wi-Fi on the old laptop to stop working, and it to work on teh new laptop.
1.why?
Hard to say, could be any number of reasons. Wireless connections sometimes loose communications and won't automatically reestablish connection.
"Ipv4 Connectivity - Internet"
"Ipv6 - No internet access"
This is normal, most systems are not IPv6 enabled.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6
You should still have Internet access via your IPv4 address.
2. How can I get the Wi-Fi on the old laptop to stop working, and it to work on the new laptop
No real reason to turn off Wi-Fi on old laptop. However you can either turn off wireless adapter usually a function button or switch on laptop or disconnect from wireless network via software.
On your new laptop you need to select the proper wireless network (SSID). Wireless connections show up when you click on the wireless icon in the taskbar. It looks like a triangle with five bars.
If your wireless connection does not show up then you should power cycle your equipment.
First cycle power on the modem and router if you have one.
Unplug power cables on the router and modem.
First plug in the modem and wait a minute or two for to establish a Internet connection.
Now plug in the router and reboot your computer to have the DHCP service assign a new IP.
Connect to your wireless SSID if it didn't connect automatically. Be sure wireless security type (WAP, WAP2) is set correctly and password is correct. And Internet should work now.
Having a lot of laptops hooked to 1 router will slow the Wi-Fi signal down and yes there will be times when 1 laptop won't connect. Check with your provider.

- Does the netgear Wireless-N 300 router with DSL Modem needs another router? I don't have cable or DSL but I wanted to wi-if in my home for my iphone and laptop without buying cable and etc. I saw this netgear model at Walmart's website and saw it said "with DSL modem". I wanted to know before buying if I still need some other modem or is the netgear enough?
