Was I right in this situation?

Last night, I was out with a friend. We were on our way home walking at about 1:30 when a man in a black hoody approaced us and asked for my purse. Without thinking, I gave him my purse containing my cell phone, wallet, and credit card and he took off running. To make a long story short, we made it home safely and I caught heat from my friend and parents, saying I should have ran or said no and fought him. But things like this happen each day and there was no telling what he had on him and what he would have done if I didn't hand over my purse. The items I had in my purse can easily be replaced but my life can't and for some reason I can't make my parents understand that. It's pretty sad that they care more about an iPhone, $50 bucks and a few debit cards than their daughters life. So was I right in the situation to just hand over my purse?

You did the right thing. Better to have lost all that material stuff than to loose your life, your health or your friend

Yes, you were scared and you probably panicked, so you gave him the purse. Its the right thing to do, saving your own life from harm. The man could've harmed you and used force. Screw your parents.

I think you were right, because instead of fighting it and making things worse like some people, you were willing to give up all your stuff to protect your self, if you didn't imagine all the things that couldve happened you probably wouldnt be at home safe

You should have resisted just a bit, but it's better than him stabbing you or something. Next time, no matter what, never put your phone in your purse, put it in your pocket, if you don't have a pocket, sew a pocket in your bra or buy a bra with pockets. Then you can take a picture of the man or call the cops if you need to without losing your phone first.

Yes. Your life is always more important than material items. In most states if you fought him, you can be charged with assault because you could have avoided a physical confrontation. There's no such thing as self defense anymore. You did the right thing and they should just be glad you made it out of the situation alive and unharmed.

You did the right things in life. It's better to find a way to get your stuff back without trouble.

Have them talk to me for five minutes and I will give them an ear full. I have studied and trained in martial arts for over 20 YEARS, and you have just done what I have been trying to teach so many students to do, but they just don't get:

Your only objective is to get out alive. Period.

I have been trained to fight and to kill, but I don't see myself reacting any differently in that situation, than what you did. If that had been me, other than you, I would have just handed over my purse too without question. Because the graveyard is full of tough guys.

Thank you for doing the right thing and getting out alive. Those items are easily replaced just as you observed.
