What exactly are apple TV boxes and what do they do?
Anyway, been considering getting my boyfriend one for christmas as he once showed interest in getting one. However, he has an internet TV, so he can get lovefilm and youtube on that (I'm not really sure what else lol, but I'm sure there are plenty of other things) so I can't really see the point in him getting one from what I understand about apple TV's?
They're mainly so you can use internet on your TV right!
But, then again, I don't know too much about these things, so if anyone has one/knows enough to tell me the differences between that and an internet TV then that would be so much help! And what actually is an apple TV and what does it do, my understanding might not be (probably isn't!) accurate.
I suppose he could access itunes and stuff, and it's portable, but I can't really think of anything else! But that's me, I'd like to know what someone who is a bit more into these things thinks lol.
Good present?
And if anyone has one. Are they any good?
And on the off chance it helps. He has an iphone 4:)
All the apple tv is is a streaming box for you're apple content, for example, you can buy a movie on itunes from apple tv and play it on the apple tv. I think it's a total waste unless you jailbreak it (which currently there's no jailbreak and I doubt there will be one.) You're spot on with you're though's. The internet tv will suffice.
The Apple TV service is essentially the same as lovefilm or Netflix (check the tv to see if it has any of these already, it would be worth upgrading from love film to Apple TV, but Netflix is probably on par if not better than Apple TV, it all depends), which are movie/tv streaming services, they allow you to watch films and tv over the Internet for a fixed monthly cost. You will need to check what their films and tv series are like compared to Netflix/lovefilm. I think Apple TV is demonstrated in Apple stores, so you can see for yourself what it is like and ask staff about this type of thing if the advertisements don't explain it clearly enough.
Too bad Apple doesn't have a website, or you could learn.
Apple TV slings media from your computer to your tv. It does this for audio and video. It must be sourced from Apple's menu available on the Apple TV. Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and others are available. Some items are free. The difference between ATV and cable is that you pay as you go, versus a standing set of channels wedded to a monthly payment. What is best about ATV is that this set up can cut the cable bill.
I have an AppleTV. The box is elegantly small. There's a connection in the back for power, ethernet network and HDMI. It can also get content using Wi-Fi connected to your home network.
Content is available from different sources. If my computer is on, connected to my home network and iTunes is active, then all the music, iTunes purchased TV and movie content - and music and music videos are available to play back on your HDTV. There are a bunch of "free" channels - YouTube, Vimeo, sports, news… There are a bunch of subscription services if you choose to do that (I have not, yet) like Hulu Plus, Netflix, sports, news…
I do video video capture and editing so one of the renders after finishing an editing job is to transcode the video through HandBrake to a MP4 and bring it into iTunes so I can watch it on the HDTV.
It is similar to many of the other streaming services/products out there, but add in the iTunes content + a feature called AirPlay + the remote is simplistically elegant and easy to use + the user interface is really simple…
In your case, the biggest difference (since there's already an internet TV being used) are the iTunes integration and AirPlay. Whether you think that is worth is up to you. It probably depends on the iTunes library content.

I got one because I was interested to understand what the fuss is about. I like it, it is not expensive, it is not limited to Apple-produced or iTunes content, it allows me to make better use of iTunes, and it made more sense (for me) to use the network in the house rather than move one of the computers to connect to the TV and make the TV a big monitor.
- Why do people buy EMPTY iphone boxes This is probably a really stupid question but why do i see so many ad for EMPTY iphone boxes? Do people actually buy them? And if they do, what benefit do they gain from an empty box!

- My aunt and uncle have the same Apple ID. I think they need separate ones, do they? I've told them to get separate ones in the event that they need to back up their phones or get new ones. Don't they need separate ones? They hardly back up their phones or hook up their iPhones to the computer.
