What is a 5th generation device?

I want to by a docking station for my iphone 4s but this is what it says This device uses the Apple Lightning Connector which is compatible with 5th Generation Apple devices and onwards. If you do not have a 5th Generation device or newer, you will need an adaptor (so will i need an adaptor?)

The lightning connector is the narrow one, used on newer models. The older connector is 30 pin and is about an inch wide. If the docking station has a lightning connector, your device should have one too, or you will need the adapter.

There's an adaptor that will allow 5th generation iDevices with the built-in, female Lightning connector to connect to older docking stations with the male 30-pin connector. Apple sells such an adaptor.

OTOH, I have not found any adaptors that will allow older generation iDevices with the built-in, female 30-pin connector to connect to new docking stations with the male Lightning connector.

I think you are outta luck.

Yes. It incorrectly stated the Lightning Cable devices are 5th generation though. The 1st device to use that was the iPhone 5, but that is actually the 6th iPhone.

As far as you are concerned you have a 4s which uses the old 30-pin adapter so you will need the adaptor 1st.
