What is a good video camera to get that is 'compatible' with Macs?

New baby on the way and I'm going to make the plunge for a dedicated video camera. I currently have an iPhone 5s so I'm aware the ability to use that smartphone and integrate it into OS.

I'm looking for advice from people that are familiar with the Mac laptop line and have experience with integrating video from a camcorder.

Thanks in advance!

All my best,
Matt

Added (1). Updating based on good feedback:

I have a Macbook Pro late 2013 model running 2.4 Ghz i5 with 10.9.3 with 8 gig of ram.

Looking at a budget of up to $650

Top contender so far:
Panasonic HC-V550

I use a MacBook Pro, MacBook and iMac for video editing. Over the years, I have used an RCA VHS camcorder (shoulder mount, analog - with a Canopus ADVC110), Canon Elura65 (firewire), Sony HDR-HC1 (firewire), Canon HF S100 (AVCHD - USB), Sony HDR-FX1 (firewire), Panasonic AG-HVX200 (firewire and P2 card into PCMCIA card slot) and Sony NEX-EA50UH… And lots of different point and shoot cams from Canon (PowerShot), Nikon, Panasonic, Fujifilm and others.

I have not yet found a camera that does not "work" with a Mac. Import, edit, export, transcode for different viewing types - youtube is different from iPhone/iPod is different from AppleTV, etc…

We don't know which Mac you are using, which version operating system, how you plan to edit (iMovie, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere or something else), the CPU, available hard drive space, RAM or where you plan to store the video…

Start with setting a budget and see what fits - then ask us which is the best from that short list.
