What is so attractive about The mainstream, about popular about The majority?

Why is everybody so into being in the mass.

Coca Cola
Starbucks
Mcdonalds
Iphones
Androids
Pop music (Miley Cyrus, Carly rae jepsen)
Pop movies (Transformers, Adam Sandler comedies)
Pop books (Hunger games, 50 shades)
franchise stores
etc…

Why does everybody conform.
It's almost like an instinct.
An instinct to conform.

I like Starbucks, but I don't like Starbucks because of it's popularity, I like Starbucks because I tried their products and I enjoyed it, but then again I don't see that as my only choice, there are many other cafes

Conforming is a fairly safe option.
And anyways, if everyone switched to the "out-of-the-mainstream" option wouldn't you have the same complaint? There isn't really a solution to your problem because if everyone becomes "original" than nobody is original.

Or maybe people like that stuff because that's what they like, things get popular because lots of people enjoy them, not because everybody really wants to like the same thing.

Everyone wants to "fit in" simple as that…

I like your question. But, before I answer it, let me say this. I don't like how you went on to complain about them like an angsty non conformist teenager (which I hope to god you are, because if you arent, ugh). But the reason they are so popular is because of marketing. These companies pay out the *** to show this to people, and since human beings are sheep, people buy their product. People have a base instict to follow trends and the norm, because it was what kept them alive at the very beginning (I'm an evolutionist, don't judge me). That instinct was shoved into them when they realized maybe the ones who didn't walk directly up to that huge cat was probably a little smarter than them. It is still around today, just like your anxiety.

You think people like those things just because they're popular? You said yourself that you like Starbucks because you like it. Things become popular because people like them.
