What is the main purpose of a screen protector?

For example on the iPhone, will the screen protector prevent any scratches to the screen? And also if you drop the iphone, will the screen still shatter if you put on an ordinary cheap screen protector?

A screen protector will protect your phone from scratches or damage, A screen protector will not save your phone in case you drop it, the screen will shatter depending on the angle it was dropped. But if you get a case and a screen protector it will be more protected, and if you plan on selling the phone in the future it will be in better condition and hold its value.

Yeah it does protect from scratches, it won't stop the screen from shattering if you drop it but if you had your phone and keys in the same pocket it might save your phone from having a big ugly scratch at the front…

The purpose of a screen protector is to stop the screen from getting scratched. I don't think it would offer much protection if you drop your phone tho that's is why you would need a heavy duty case.
