What lense should I use that is not too expensive and for a beginner? And also a good camera?

So recently I've been taking pics on my iPhone and I love taking pics since I was so young so I want to know if I'm really that serious about photography and not waste a lot of money on it without making sure.

Are you frustrated that your iPhone is not giving you satisfactory results? This can be caused by two problems: (1) you have grown more discerning in evaluating your photos and the iPhone has begun to fall short. (2) You need to improve your skills as a photographer. The iPhone has a pretty good camera in good light. So why don't you do some searching on-line before looking for a better camera. A good photographer can take admirable photos on any kind of camera. Yes, including an iPhone. There are artists for whom this is their gear. Once you improve your skills, then it might be time to move to a more serious camera. A good source for information is http://www.dpreview.com/...review.com.

If you don't mind a single, quite wide focal length (i.e. A lens which can't zoom), then modern iPhones are actually pretty good. Not so hot when it gets dark (although they're getting better at that too), but in the day time they are getting as good now as mid-level digital cameras were ten years ago. That's how far we've come.

If your problem is that you want more coverage (i.e. Wide to telephoto) then you may well be able to justify buying a dedicated camera with a zoom lens. You do not have to spend a lot, though. These days, even DSLR or mirrorless cameras aimed at beginners are more than good enough, and they often come with a quite versatile lens thrown in. Unless you're going to be shooting in very extreme situations, then this will be everything you need for a while.

Go check out some cameras at a good store. We could recommend all sorts of things here, but it's better to get hold of them and see how they feel. If you have small or large hands, that will make a difference. It will also depend on how much weight you want to carry around.

One more thing though: don't fall into the mistake of thinking that buying a new camera will magically improve your pictures. It won't. In fact, at first, they might even seem worse, because you're still getting used to the camera. As you improve your skills and use the camera more, you will get more out of it.

Only you can answer that question: Am I serious about photography? The only way to find out is to spend some money on some decent gear and do the work. An iPhone is a very limiting choice - it has only the one lens, you can't control aperture, shutter speed or ISO so you can't really judge whether you enjoy the actual practice of photography with it. You can enjoy shooting with it (I enjoy shooting with mine, but it is not serious photography.)

You need a fully adjustable DSLR with lenses to figure this out. B&H is running a loss leader on Canon T6 with the basic intro kit lenses (18-55mm, 75-300mm). I have a 5D Mark ii and the gamut of type L lenses (pro level gear) and I actually bought this for the body only (I have a very specific shot in mind which the APS (smaller) sensor will work to my advantage.) The lenses are okay for a beginner.

This kit costs $499., which I know is a lot for a beginner, but is less than 1/2 of the price of one type L lens. Photography is expensive.

If you enjoy shooting with your iPhone but want more control of your final results, then you need a real camera.
Only you can decide.

  • Where can I get good quality camera lense attachments for my Iphone 4? Like insane quality lenses for my IPhone 4? For example: http://www.highsnobiety.com/2011/11/22/photojojo-iphone-camera-lens-dial-case/ http://coolmaterial.com/tech/quattro-iphone-4-camera-lens-system/
  • What's a good phone that's not too expensive? I need a phone with a good amount of storage, fairly up to date and fast but something not too expensive around £300 at most £400 at a push. So preferably not Apple because I have an iPhone 6 at the moment and I'm just having more and more problems with it
  • What's a good beginner camera? I'm interested in taking up photography as a hobby, but i'm a total newbie. I have recently been experimenting with my iPhone and a point and shoot camera. I was wondering what kind of gear i should start out with? I definitely want a DSLR camera but i have no idea what brand or quality I should buy. Any advice would be appreciated
  • My iPhone 3GS Is Broken! List of good popular phones? Not too expensive? My iPhone 3Gs is broken. The bit inside that connects to the charger has snapped off. Is there anyway of fixing it? If so how much do you think it will cost? If its not fixable then does anyone know of any good phones that I could ask for, for my birthday? Preferably not too expensive, Thank you!
