What prepaid service is the best overall?

I'm with Verizon at the moment with contact but just looking for alternative pre-paid style!

I would look into Net10 or Straight Talk. Net10 and Straight Talk are divisions of Tracfone wireless. They buy airtime from all major carriers including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. They sell both GSM and CDMA phones.

If you like Verizon, but do not like the price you are paying for Verizon service. I suggest you look into Net10 or Straight Talk. If you want to keep your current Verizon phone and bring it to Net10 or Straight Talk you can do that. You will just need to purchase a code for $15 and program your phone to work with either Net10 or Straight Talk and purchase a unlimited plan. The Net10 unlimited plans give you 30 service days unlimited talk, text and 2.5 GB of data for $50. The Straight Talk unlimited plans give you 30 service days unlimited talk, text and 2.5GB of data for $45. Straight Talk is only available from Wal-Mart or Straight Talk.com.

If you want a new phone for Straight Talk or Net10 and want it to use Verizon towers for service. Look for CDMA-V on the front of the box. This phone will work with Verizon towers.
CDMA-S means that it will work with Sprint towers. GSM-A means the phone will work with AT&T towers, GSM-T means the phone will work with T-Mobile towers.
