Based on the same type of software, obviously the iOS but the iPhone 6 has newer features.
If want to save some money, get the iPhone 5S/5C
If you want the latest/trending, get the iPhone 6/Plus
I personally would go with the iPhone 6.
Please don't look the difference, actually iPhone 6 is highly motivated smartphone covers bigger screen, new technologies, better camera, NFC etc. Go for it!

Besides the size. Apple claims it is faster by making 5 slower by planting bugs on your device through updates.
The iPhone 6 is larger, which is definitely worth an upgrade. The camera is a little better, the processor is slightly faster but not by much, and it now has NFC which allows you to pay for things at stores with your phone. Both phones are pretty similar, so basically it comes down to if you want small phone buy the 5s, if you want a lager phone but not too big, get the 6.
