The iPhone was the first smartphone. The word 'smartphone' didn't even exist before the iPhone.
According to this link, it was called "Simon" and launched in 1992, although the word "smartphone" didn't appear until 1995.

The Motorola razor was the last popular phone before the iphone was released, but wasn't a smartphone at all. BlackBerry made quasi smart phones prior to the iPhone, but they weren't touch screen and used mostly for business.
Windows CE phones, like the Samsung Jack, and Microsoft Pocket PC phones were around before iPhone. These weren't marketed to the consumers, mostly business users.
I don't remember if there were any palm pilots with phones built in before iPhone.
The iPhone reversed the trend of phones getting smaller and smaller, which was a trend I hated. The movie Zoolander makes fun of that trend by having the main character carrying a phone barely bigger than his finger.
Even though there were other devices that did much of what the iPhone did, the iPhone brought the technology to the consumer market.
Blackberrys. Small screens with full physical keyboards below them or some variant of that design.

- Why iPhone Wi-Fi better than other smartphones? We have Wi-fi in our job, only a guy who owns an IPhone is able to use his Wi-Fi, the others persons who own other smartphone can't connect to Wi-Fi in our company. Why?
