It depends what you want to do and how heavily you're already invested in the Apple ecosystem.

Do you already use iTunes a lot; Are you likely to buy film and TV show downloads from the iTunes store; Do you own an iPhone or iPad that you'd like to mirror on to a TV? All of these are reasons to invest further in an Apple TV.

Are you more interested in Netflix or Amazon Instant; Would you prefer to download from 'other' sites. Do you already have a large collection of movies and video and music on your own home storage? These are reasons to look at either a SmartTV, or at an alternative media streamer 'add-on' box for your existing TV.

Most midrange and high-end TVs are coming out with some form of Smart features. So brands have better execution than others. Sony is pretty slick, for example. However, you don't need to buy a Smart TV to get Smart features. Many Blu-ray players under $100 now come equipped with Smart features too.

So rather than putting all your eggs in one basket with a $1000 'Smart TV' purchase, and then finding out that new apps are limited to just those from the manufacturer supported site, or worse, that you're stuck with what's on the TV, or the apps only allow you to view certain file types, why not have a look if changing to a Smart Blu-ray player or one of the Android boxes (under $80) or hooking up your laptop with a wireless keyboard might give you a taste of the Smart enabled life. That way, you can decide if it's for you and which platform might suit you best.
