The phone isn't wasting energy, or battery, to run more applications, therefore saving battery.
Each app on the iPhone requires RAM and CPU power as soon as you have openned the app.

For example, if you leave Skype open in the background you will see your battery drain very quickly. Skype constantly tries to keep your connection to the servers active so the amount of resources does not change, even in the background.
Best practice to save battery power is to completely close programs after you are done using them.
With no apps running in the background, less processor power is used.
