When you buy something online do they tax you?

I order some clothes from plndr.com and didn't tax me. Weird and I order some shoes from zappos.com and they didn't tax me. Weird. And I had a few dollars left in my debit card and I bought a case for my iPhone. I bought the case from amazon and the shipper was from china(hong kong) and they still didn't tax me. Weird. Lol. So why aren't they taxing me?

When the place you are buying the item from has a nexus in your state
but this is probably about to change

:D

They aren't required to. However, they probably will soon, thanks to Uncle Sam not wanting anyone to have fun. But right now, they don't have to. And even if they were supposed to tax you but didn't, that would be their legal burden, so don't worry.

The only time you should be taxed online is if you are buying something in the state you live in. Sales tax is based on which state you live in and within the state which county you live in. It would be difficult for online sellers to tax every seller. If you live in a state that charges sales tax you are probably supposed to be paying that sales tax on your state income tax. You should be keeping track of your online purchases to claim it on your taxes.

And does your state and local taxing authorities have a sales and use tax in your area of the country that you do live in then at this time in your life and you probably are supposed be paying them the sales and use tax each tax year when you fill out and file that state income tax return for this purpose and time in your life.
