Where does data go when it's deleted?

From what I understand, "data" is technically mass. So where does it go when it's deleted from a computer or iPhone for example? Since mass can't just disappear due to certain laws or physics.

Recycle bin.

It goes into the Recycle Bin

Um, no. Data is not technically mass on conventional rewritable media. It's a bunch of 1s and 0s represented by magnetism or electrical charge, among other things. When you erase it, it's either allocated as free space and overwritten at some point with different data or it's overwritten with random data at the time of erasure.

Data is an arrange of all 1s and 0s. When its deleted it turns into empty space "all 0s"

Who told your its mass?
