You need earphones with a "lightning" plug.
Or an Apple lighting headphone adapter, that allows you plug in any standard headphones.
I own a 6 - not a plus - and it takes the standard mini audio plug for headphones. Dead sure of that - I sleep with this, using it as an mp3 player and radio. My daily phone is an 8+ - and THAT takes a lightning connector. But since I own so many headphones, earbuds, noise-cancelling ones, etc., I just got some adapters for cheap on eBay.
There's no need to do that. ALL variants of the iPhone 6 have headphone sockets.
If the socket on yours is broken, buy a pair of Lightning EarPods as they include a Lightning to headphone socket adapter. If you ask family and friends then like me they may even have one or more of those lying around and never used.
Why not go the more conventional route & get a pair of headphones since that model still has the headphone jack?
Not necessary. Your phone has a traditional headphone jack.
