Where is the best place to buy an iPhone 4s: the Verizon store or the Apple store?
I don't have an upgrade until January but am looking to buy an iPhone soon. I've been looking at the various sites and saw that there was a huge price difference between the Apple and Verizon stores. A rep at the Verizon store told me I wouldn't even have to change my existing plan, but just pay the $449 for the phone. Why would I buy an iPhone 4s from Verizon for $449.99 when they're sold on the Apple website for $99?

I think you should go with the apple store. Of course this is just my opinion. I heard they have something called apple care that Verizon doesn't have. There are many others who also wonder the same thing and maybe human use that as a reference and see what they got in the end and their review based on that.

My vote would be to go directly to the Apple store, you know for a fact that the phone will be unlocked, this may not be the case with Verizon. The other reason is if you ever have a problem with the phone it will have to be resolved by Apple anyway and so on top of the charge to fix the phone Verizon may decide, being the big cuddly corporate that they are to charge you a handling fee.

The $449.99 is the full retail price. This is the price if you are not eligible to sign a contract. The $99.99 is the contract price. This is the price if you are eligible to sign a contract. If you in the middle of a two year contract, you are not eligible to sign a two year contract. The Apple website assumes advertises the contract price. It will say "with two year contract." You can't sign a two year contract yet. Thus, the price will go up when you put in your information. It will be $449.99.
It doesn't matter whether you go through Apple or Verizon. Both allow you to get Apple Care. You will handle issues with the phone through whichever is most convenient for you either way. And it will not be unlocked from either one because Apple asks you which carrier you are purchasing for and gives you one that is locked to that carrier.
