Where to return a lost iPhone?

Added (1). I found an iPhone 4S about a week ago, I'm not sure which carrier it belongs to. I would like to know where the best place to return a lost iPhone would be - where the company would actually attempt to return it to its owner.

It has a lock on it, so I can't view any of the owner's information to do so myself.

Traditionally it's to Police, but if you live in the UK many Police Services have stopped accepting stolen goods. Some Police still take phones in though as found phones often prove to be dumped after a theft or robbery so they can be vital evidence.

If police don't want to know then the best way is to return it to Apple or to a phone shop. A shop can quickly remove the SIM and tell you which carrier the phone is with: if they deal with the same company they'll take care of getting the phone back to the owner and if they don't they'll either direct you to the right place or will frequently have a reciprocal agreement with other shops to exchange lost phones.

It's a good idea to return it with a brief letter giving your contact details and the place and date you found it. That can help if the owner wishes to thank you and also may help to
secure a conviction if the phone was stolen.

Police station might be one. That's where other stuff is returned even around the world.

The outcome seems to vary, though.

I would think a police station.

You can either try calling the contacts in the phone if you can get into it, or possibly take it to the nearest police station and they may be able to get the info of the owner from it.

Any Apple store or the carrier that shows on the screen when the phone powers up (or the carrier that is printed on the SIM card).

Police, carrier store, Apple Store.

  • Lost iPhone 5s, Is sprint aware if your iPhone is in Lost Mode? I lost my iPhone 5s today. I enabled the lost mode in the phone and I'm currently tracking it. Does sprint know when a iPhone is in lost mode? Does it know if you lost your iPhone and your tracking it?
  • If I broke my Iphone 4s 16gb can I return it and get an Iphone 4S 32gb? It's still under a warranty so I can return it to get a new one I know, but the 16 is a little small so I was wondering that when I return it would it be possible to upgrade my GB as well? Does it cost more? Would I basically be paying for a new phone instead of the 50$ it is to get it replaced? I have AT&T.
  • How to return a lost iPhone? I was on a flight yesterday. I was looking for a pen, so I reached in the seat pocket in front of me and I found an iPhone. I turned it on, and it had a picture of a family, so i would like to give it back. However, the phone is passcode protected and it is on airplane mode, so the guy can't track it on iCloud. I tried contacting the airline and the lost and found, but no luck. What should I do?
