I have the iPhone Xs and love it. I upgraded from the 6. Before that I had the 4s. If you want the best quality picture and camera, get the Xs. Otherwise, you can save money and get the X or Xr and will be sufficient to the casual user.
Xr and Xs are super expensive. Id say the iPhone 6s or the 7.
You have to get the latest version, I'm serious it is I know how Apple works.
Anything up to the 6 series is either end of life or soon to be end of life.
At the moment I would go with 8 or X series depending on your requirements.
