Who is responsible for buying Insurance on an Ebay item?

I bought a 500 dollar Iphone on Ebay and it was lost in the mail. I've gone to the post office about it because it was their fault, but they will only pay 50 dollars for a 500 dollar mistake because there was not insurance bought on the package. Is it up to the buyer to buy insurance on a package, or the seller?

If the seller does not buy insurance, they have elected to self-insure and owe you the entire amount. Sellers can't charge extra for insurance and it's up to them to pay for it.

There are opposing answers above and both could be right. The first (at least at this posting) mentions insurance, however that if you just don't receive the item. So, that's correct. If you don't receive the item, then you dispute it.

Secondly, if the item did arrive and was damaged, then that would depend on the shipping terms. Did the shipper insure it or offer YOU to buy insurance?

Whether it's up to the buyer or the seller depends on the terms of the agreement. I always insured everything I shipped and rolled that cost into the cost of shipping it. It just makes sense to insure it. I bought a monitor and received an empty box in the mail. The shipper had it insured, got the money and sent me another one. I got my monitor, and he, technically, made two sales.

Bottom line, the seller is responsible for the insurance or being able to cover the loss if the item is lost or damaged.

I have absolutely no idea where some of the other posters are coming up with their answers.

There's no "automatic" insurance with Ebay. You have to ask the buyer to insure it, and you have to PAY the buyer for that insurance - IF they agree to buy insurance for it.

If you didn't ask for it, and the buyer didn't promise it to you in the selling description, you don't get insurance.

If you pay for your purchase through PayPal, as most sellers require, everything is automatically insured.
You need not add any further insurance. Inform the seller.

It is up to you to ask the seller for insurance, you didn't so you are out of luck.

  • Why hasn't my ebay item gotten any bids? Its a working iPhone 4 and its as cheap as the broken ones that are getting bids! I don't understand why it isn't exploding with bids. • Item I've order has been MC999 eBay Listing Removed what will happen? I've order an iphone case about a week ago and I live in Australia and its being sent from Hong Kong. It is marked as posted and I'm not sure what's gonna happen after this, will it be returned or will it get here and the transaction has already gone through meaning I've bought it already.
  • Is Fed-Ex responsible for giving away my package to someone else? I had an iPhone that was coming in couple days ago and I saw the delivery confirmation. To my surprise, it said it was delivered and signed by someone else. I called Fed-ex and they refuse to take responsibility because they said someone was at the house and they signed it. (No one was at home at the time) They showed the signature, but no one that is living in the house is named "Sarah." There wasn't even a last name! What do I do?!
  • I was just wondering what part of iphone is responsible for the sensitivity touch of iphone 6? Sometimes the screen of my iphone 6 is moving by itself and clicking random things. Sometimes it also stops responding and just hangs. And sometimes my finger is not touching the screen and it starts typing and clicking stuff. I tried to hard reset and factory reset but it didn't work. Is this just a faulty screen/lcd? Or motherboard problem? Or what?
