Why can't I restore my jailbroken iPhone 4?

I jailbroke my iphone 4 using redsn0w 0.9.10.b6. This was a semi tethered jailbreak and i have turned my phone on and off. I now want to completely remove the jailbreak by restoring my iphone. But iTunes brings up an error- 'firmware not compatible'. I was wondering how i can get past this? (by the way i'm trying to remove it because it no longer works when i download the jailbreak tool- as i deleted it ages ago)

That happened me before. I searched up everything about it and nobody would help me and I even tried to contact apple and they wouldn't help me because they hate jailbreak so I had to buy a new iphone and i don't jailbreak anymore.

Best way, re-jailbreak your iphone.

Get the newest version of redsn0w:

https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.14b2.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

Follow the instructions to jailbreak it again.

If that still doesn't work, you'll need to put your phone into pwned DFU mode (NOTE: THIS IS DIFFERENT TO REGULAR DFU MODE!). This can be done through redsn0w. The option is located in the 'Extras' section.

Once your phone is in pwned DFU mode, iTunes will be able to restore it to an official firmware.

There should be absolutely no reason though, if your phone turns on, works fine, and everything is peachy that you shouldn't simply be able to re-jailbreak it, untethered, over the top of your existing jailbreak, and get Cydia back and have it recognised in iTunes without issue.

If you still can't get it working, check that your Windows Hosts file hasn't got any cydia, apple, or itunes references in there.

Your hosts file can be found: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open with… ~> Notepad ~> Delete any lines that has 'apple', 'itunes', 'saurik' or 'cydia' mentioned anywhere.

Firmware not compatible errors are nearly always caused because you're trying to restore to a previous firmware (i.e., downgrading), or because you're trying to restore to another phones firmware (i.e., you have an iphone 4, but a 3GS. Ipsw).

Hope this helps!

  • What can I do to restore my Unlocked & Jailbroken iPhone 3g? I recently got the phone. I tried to erase everything on the phone while it was near death, and I think it died while doing so. It then went into recovery mode. I tried to put it into iTunes to restore it, but that keeps failing too. The phone has a custom firmware, and I have no idea where or how to get the firmware to properly restore the phone to. Any ideas?
  • Safe to restore iPhone 5 with jailbroken backup? I had been wondering whether it's safe to restore my iPhone 5 from a jailbroken backup. I just sold my iPhone 4s and backed it up recently while it was jailbroken. Has anyone successfully restored from a jailbroken backup on the iPhone 5 yet? Please let me know.

  • Is an iPhone better 'jailbroken' or not 'jailbroken'? I just got the iPhone 5 and I keep hearing about 'jailbreaking' iPhones to be able to do a lot more things. So my question is: Is jailbreaking an iPhone bad? What kind of cool things can I do if I jailbrake it? How do I jailbrake it, if its a good thing?
