Why can't I unlock my iPhone?

I have ATT Iphone 4. Bought it brand new 2012 October 25th. My 2 year upgrade is due this year October 25th.
I'm going over seas for 2 months and i need my phone unlocked. Only problem is AT&T is saying i have to wait till my 2 years are up, and only then i will be able to unlock my phone. I asked if i can just pay off the phone right now and ( i don't mind the early termination fee) but they said "… Your IMEI will need to pass the two year margin, not your contract with us…"

Since you are the original owner the IMEI (that is the number the unlock seller would need from you - remote factory unlock) won't be blacklisted. So there's nothing that would stop you from having your iPhone unlocked like that.

Very strange they have this stupid policy considering you really need the phone to travel abroad, normally should unlock them in this situation. There are 2 unlocks without involving at&t one is around 40$ for phones that are not on contract and takes pretty long (7-14 days) and one is a bit more expensive 60$ but takes up to 7$ and will work for all at&t phones.
