Why does my small amount of photos take up so much space?

On my iPhone 7, I have only 76 pictures/videos. When I click manage storage, it says that they take up 1.3 gb of space, while my friends have hundreds of photos but when they click manage storage, it only takes up a couple hundred mb. Why do the photos take up so much space on my phone or how can I fix this problem?

Look at the individual pictures for their size and resolution -- your average photo is almost 20 megabytes

That could be the way you store them -- that's 4 megabytes by 5 megabytes in resolution. Remember, each pixel can take up to six bytes (although most will take at least three). Change your resolution, and you can cut the number of pixels required, depending on how high you need the resolution to be for later usage -- it does not necessarily mean loss of quality.

If the videos are lengthy and shot at full resolution, they'll take lot of space. Your friends might have shorter clips or less videos so they don't have much space blocked.

You have to keep them off your phone as much as possible, especially videos. Photos have so much that has to be read and reproduced that they take up tremendous space, just as printing or photocopying a photo takes up a lot more toner than copying a letter.
