Why is Apple slowing down old iphones. Someone please tell me what's going on (i use an iPhone 5s)?

They slow down previous models to encourage you to buy a new one that they've not slowed down yet
They say its to protect the battery - LOL!

They claim it's because as the batteries get older they hold less charge, and so in order that you can still get a full days use out of older iPhones they have quietly been slowing the phones down.

That's what they claim, however if it was all above board, I don't know why they'd feel the need to keep it quiet!

To preserve battery life.

Most users would rather a battery that lasts all day than a faster phone that dies out by lunch time.

Apple's explanation was that since older batteries can't hold their power as well as they did previously that they throttled back the performance of the processor in order to prevent issues. No, it wasn't to force owners to get newer models since they also (& still do) update those older models longer than their Android counterparts. Case in point, your 5s still can run the latest iOS in 2018 despite the phone being launched in 2013.
