Why is it bad to email late at night?

Most of the time it's rude to be abruptly wake someone up to a notification that may not be important. Else, it could create noise and disrupt sleep for others.

Because people have e-mail connected to their phones which they keep on for emergency and it may wake people up for nothing. (I'm not saying I care and they shoould have their phone on silent but I'm just answering your quesiton)

Lack of sleep.

I notice that people with iphones tend to have it alert them of every single thing, it is amusing to me. It is common sense to silence certain alerts (e.g. Email) during the night or just in general. If you have a phone that alerts you during the nighttime of an email, which is meant to be a message that you get back to later, that is not the sender's fault.

You might though not want to send out work emails after a certain hour because it can suggest negative things about you (e.g. That you live unstably, are awake at odd hours of the night, are disorganized, etc.). But, as far as email alerts to phones? That is not a reason I care about. I was recently in a hotel room with a buddy of mine who had his phone alert him of everything. During the night, his phone went off several times. I did not once think what is wrong with the sender, I thought what is wrong with *him* :)
