Why is my iPhone Data usage going through the roof?

IPhone users! When I was using a Galaxy, my husband and I SHARED 2gb, we skyped and used data and everything and never exceeded the 2gb. But since switching to this god-awful iPhone, we've upped our plan to 4GB AND WE EXCEED IT IN 15 DAYS?!

I use Wi-Fi 99% of the time, but I have no push notifications going. My husband on the other hand is Across the country (in Alberta, I'm in Ontario, he's using an Ontario number), so I can't check his phone. But we don't use imessage. We have unlimited shared call/photo/text/video, we send LOTS of photo/video of my daughter. He says he has most things turned off. He can't use Wi-Fi, so it's strictly data.

We facetime for about 3 hours throughout weekends, but that tells me it only uses 75-200mb?

Please help. I can't keep affording $260 bills!

Added (1). Does his not using a local number to his location hurt anything? Or does that matter at all?

Turn "roaming" off. It's updating stuff live, like for example your mailbox.

Apps running in the background is usually a big bad culprit.

But you also said Facetime. If you are using it on Wi-Fi and he can't that's a BIG part of it since Facetime runs off of both signals.

You can view your data usage for Celluar Data in settings>General>Usage.
This will show your total data usage, each month or bill cycle I would suggest resetting this so you can keep track of your usage.
Things that would use a lot of data would be like Youtube, Pandora, Songify, any Music or video streaming sites.

And if his phone is set to roaming to keep data speed up it can get pricey too.
