Why is my iPhone's battery draining pretty fast even when not in use?
Could it be an old battery or is the unit is overheating?

Typically there's something running in the background. Restarting can help or you can go into settings and find out what is using the battery. The type of phone will determine where to look.
Old battery… You would need to change it
Turn off all apps. Each app turns on automatically when used, but there's no reason for all of them to be running in the background. Some apps might be energy hogs, so kill off apps one at a time to find it.////////Your phone might be far from a cell tower, especially if you have been traveling and it connected to a cell tower far away rather than the local one that you commonly use. To fix this, put it in airplane mode (which disconnects the internet), then get out of airplane mode (which causes the phone to seek the best cell tower connection)--problem solved because the phone doesn't have to increase power to contact a distant cell tower./////////It is possible that the battery is bad, but try the two ideas first (apps and airplane mode).
When not using phone turn screen off. It helps alot on battery drainage
