Why is Skype banned in Dubai?
I can buy many different types of hardware here in Dubai, all pre-installed with Skype such as laptops, tablets, smart phones, etc. I can buy an Apple iphone and download Skype from the UAE Apple App shop and even buy Skype credit from the same UAE shop… But I'm told it's illegal to use Skype in Dubai. The Skype website was blocked but is now accessible however I'm told it's illegal to use Skype.
I asked the Telecommunications Regulators here in Dubai but they ignore my emails. Does anyone know why it's banned?
Added (1). My Broadband Service provider told me it's OK to use Skype for PC to PC calls but the Telecommunications Regulators (TRA) told me I can't.
I don't want to break the law but it's very confusing and frustrating!
They want you to use the local telecom company and pay them the long distance fees. Saudi Arabia had similar laws when I worked there with callback systems (this was before Skype) but they tried to stop them because of the money they were losing.
