Why won't my iphone show up on my computer when i connect it?

I connect my iphone to my windows laptop with a cabel thingy and it shows up that its charging on my iphone but it doesn't give me any options to transfer media etc. Also when i go on 'computer' it doesn't show up even though it should because its connected?

You have to download iTunes if you want to see your iPhone. After it's downloaded, connect your iphone and open iTunes and there you'll see your phone. The only thing you'll see in "computer" is your iphone camera pictures. Hope I helped.

You may not have the correct drivers, what version of windows are you using? When you plug it in you may see a message in the bottom right hand corner(windows vista/7). Click on it and see what it says, your PC may be too old to get the drivers. Hope I helped

So I've been trying to connect my Iphone 4 that running ios 7.0.4 on my Gateway NE51B18u on windows 8 and it does not pop up but if i search for it under "this pc" I can find it. I know it's not the cable because I have tried it on a separate computer and it works just fine so I believe it's a setting or something on this computer. Also when I open up Itunes it does not show up as a device and that really the main reason I want to use it is to sync my music.
