Could just require a reset. If the iPhone is on iOS 8 then that could be the problem. When older phones get updated to newer software they tend to become buggy and slow down due to the software being made to fit for the newer models. Try holding down the lock button on top and the home button at the same time, wait until it turns off and when you see the Apple icon light up release the buttons. If it still doesn't work you could try backing up your phone, restoring it to factory settings then putting the backed up memory back on the iPhone.
