Will a router with QoS prioritize gaming on an Ethernet connection?

We have 2 desktops at home connected to the router, a few laptops wirelessly and 2 gaming consoles wired as well. Currently do not have a router with QoS, just the one the service provider provides.
Recently, while gaming League of Legends, I would get insane ping spikes and no other console or computer would be downloading and when I asked my brother if he was downloading he said "just my iphone apps". Somehow the iphone app sucked up enough bandwidth to handicap my game.

Basically, my question is, if I buy a router with QoS, will I be able to prioritize either my Ethernet port for my desktop to receive enough bandwidth to run the game smooth without interference from other devices?

Also I believe that the main desktop (not mine) is the one directly connected to the current router and mine is located upstairs connected by Ethernet.

All suggestions are helpful as well as a choice of router which won't break the wallet!

It doesn't matter. If it is a online or web connected game, you are not overloading the router, but the internet connection itself.
there's no way I know of to prioritize which computer get to use the internet the most. You need more bandwidth, plain and simple. You will need to upgrade your internet.

Also the amount of players using the game in other locations can also cause sluggish play.

  • What's the difference between a cheap router and a good router? Just wanted to know the difference between a cheap router and an expensive router, I know that is a very broad question, I'm just a bit confused on how a router works. Does it increase my Internet speed on multiple devices? I get 50Mb per second, Well at least that's what I pay for. I have a PS3 two iPhones and a tablet, as well as a desktop PC that is wireless. Can anyone recommend an excellent router under $150
  • Share ethernet connection to iphone with no Wi-Fi? I'm in my dorm room at school and I don't have a Wi-Fi connection to my laptop, I have it plugged in to an ethernet cable and have tried sharing that connection to my iphone but it usually only works if my laptop also has a Wi-Fi signal. I was wondering if there was anyway to get Wi-Fi on my phone when I don't have Wi-Fi on my laptop, either through ethernet or bluetooth or whatever.
