Will I be able to use an iPhone 4 from the US in Peru?

Well I'm thinking on buying a used iPhone 4 in the US and bring it to Peru to use it here but I was wondering if it must be unlocked. Also, I heard there are some mobile companies in the US that don't use SIM cards or something similar so I guess that I won't be able to use the iPhone in Peru in that case. Correct me if I'm wrong though, I'm not sure about that. But if I'm correct, then which mobile companies DO have SIM cards so I can use the phone here?

I have one in my iphone 4s but i don't know if it is on the iphone 5 and if i buy the iphone 5 from at&t i shouldent have to unlock it right? Thats how the 4s works. If its at&t it doesn't need unlocking
