Windows 7: Why can't I connect wirelessly?
I have windows 7 partition on my macbook laptop.
When I'm at school I try to sign into the school wi-fi system, but I can't get it to work. I get an unhelpful message: "Could not connect to school-wireless". When I run diagnostics it says it couldn't find the issue, or to try re-booting the router (lol). I know there isn't anything wrong with the underlying hardware because I use it at home all the time. However I have a linksys router that runs a system key configuration program to be able to log in, so I don;t know what exactly is different with the linksys than any other wi-fi connection. I know I have access because I can sign in with my mac and iPhone with no problem. I don't know what features to look at to find the root cause. The macbook and iphone don't tell me anything other than its WPA2 enterprise encryption and whether or not the userID and password worked. When I looked into properties in windows it actually told me then name of the server its trying to log into. This is stuff I don't see with my mac so I can't verify it the correct values are set. I don't know what I should be looking at. Any ideas? Where exactly in memory is this information stored? Is it in the registry? I don't know if this matters but my laptop battery has been dead for a long time so certain user settings (like time) no longer get stored accurately. This is pretty much the only problem I have with the windows 7 partition.
Only hint I see is the WPA2 Enterprise settings, and you'll probably need to consult your school's technology support (I'm guessing you're attending a school with a Mac-centric network). Unlike typical home routers supporting WPA2 wireless encryption with a pre-shared key, WPA2 enterprise in a wireless access point requires you to supply a user name and password. The wireless access point passes along these credentials to an external authentication server. After successful authentication, the wireless access point negotiates the actual encryption used between your device and the wireless access point. It's unclear from your description if your Linksys home router is using a similar setup (typically WPA2 with RADIUS server authentication).
This type of infrastructure is typically found in a large business or education environment supporting many wireless access points. I'm unfamiliar with Mac-centric environments, but in a PC/Windows-centric environment, the centralized authentication is often tied to Windows Active Directory. In addition to regulating users by valid name and password, the Active Directory can restrict what machines are allowed to login by requiring the machine to be an accepted domain member before it can connect to the network.

- Laptop won't connect wirelessly but other devices do? I recently changed ISPs. When the guy left I was on the internet wirelessly on the laptop but the next day the only way I could get online on the laptop was through an Ethernet cable connected to the router. I have a Linksys WRT54G… But I don't think it is the router. Our iPhones, Nintendo Wii and wireless printer can connect wirelessly but my laptop won't. Any suggestions?
- How would you wirelessly stream music from your iTunes to your iPhone? So I have an apple TV and its connected wirelessly to my computer so I can listen to music from my itunes library through the Apple tv with no problem. Can the same thing be done with my iPhone, I want to plug it into my dock to listen to music but I don't want to put actual music on the phone, so I figured I could just stream it to the phone from my computer like I do with the apple tv. Can you even do this and if so how?
